BARNESVILLE, Ohio -- Paul Richard Kirk, 23, of Barnesville, Ohio, went missing on April 21, 1974. To this day, his family searches for closure.

Kirk had just undergone gastric bypass surgery and was having complications.

His doctor and family became concerned when he didn't show up for an appointment.

Shortly after his disappearance, Kirk's car showed up on a rural road.

"On the dashboard was his wallet, his social security card was there, family photos were not there, money was not there, the car keys were never found." the man's sister Sue Price told 7News.

33 years later, there is no file on this case at the Belmont County Sheriff's Office.

Antegrade Bowel Intussusception Can Cause Recurrent, Chronic Postoperative Intestinal Obstruction

Several complications can be seen after pancreatic surgery, most notably bleeding, infections and anastomotic dehiscence. Bowel obstruction can also be seen due to internal hernias or anastomotic strictures. A more unusual etiology for bowel obstruction in this setting is intussusception.

Intussusception is often a pediatric condition. Adult cases have rarely been reported, and are usually caused by a lead point. The paper published by Dr. Luis Leon's group on the November 28 issue of World Journal of Gastroenterology describes a rare case of adult intussusception without lead points. Cases without lead points are most often seen after gastric bypasses for morbid obesity or after biliary reconstruction for choledochal cysts. Intussusception occurring after pancreatic duct reconstructions is rare.

2001 operation forever changes 2 obese women

Lydia Cook of Yuba City was a bit of a pioneer back in 2001, when she checked into a Roseville hospital for weight-loss surgery.

At the time, many insurance plans refused to cover the operations, labeling them risky and unproven.

But Cook and her sister-in-law, Nita Kurtz, who were both about 100 pounds overweight, convinced their carriers that gastric bypass operations would be a good investment.

And they are living proof, Cook said, that the decision was the right one.

"We're doing great," Cook said, responding to new studies showing that the operations sharply reduce deaths and serious illnesses related to obesity. "I'm a much healthier person now than I was back then."

In 2001, Cook was just 24 years old; Kurtz was 31. Yet both had serious health issues related to their weight, which hovered around 270 pounds.

The Weight of the World

Despite the obsession with weight loss in America, the rate of obesity has skyrocketed over the past 50 years. One cannot turn on the television without being bombarded with commercials for the latest weight-loss pill, exercise machine or fad diet. Yet, according to Andrew Wolf, associate professor of medicine at the University, one-third of American adults are obese and another third are overweight.

According to Student Health nutrition educator Melanie Brede, "the medical definition for obesity is based on the body mass index, which is an equation of height to body weight."

A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese, while a BMI greater than 25 is considered overweight.

According to Joel Schectman, associate professor of medicine at the University, the use of BMI to define obesity is an arbitrary definition used for the sake of convenience.

In Memoriam: Remembering John Henry

Our readers share their memories...

Garland, TX
My wife and I visited John at the Ky. Horse Park just this last month. I always admired the grit and determination that made him what he was. You couldn't be around John for very long without feeling that he wanted to communicate something; that he wanted something from you, from everyone who came by and stopped to say hello and couldn't understand what it was. Perhaps it was just the adulation. He was a legend and he seemed to know it. Perhaps he always knew it.

Holbrook, New York
I was planning a trip to the Horse Park but knew John's time was short. We didn't make it to see him, but the memories I have of watching him perform are burned indelibly in my mind. Often when I need a lift, I watch one of his performances and it makes me try harder.

Annual Collier ‘Heart Walk’ is Saturday

Barbara Cabrera managed to get off the dance floor without blacking out.

“Don't let me be the fat lady passing out on the dance floor," she thought to herself one evening three years ago.

Her family doctor made her face reality. At the age of 39, she had suffered a “silent" heart attack.

“Something has got to change," her doctor told her. “You are not going to be here in five years."

She hit the scale at 350 pounds, she was diabetic, suffering from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. She was constantly tired but had developed sleep apnea.

“It was a vicious cycle, health-wise," Cabrera, of Naples, said.

She took her battle one day at a time. More than 200 pounds lighter today and free of diabetes, she is inspiration for anyone grappling with heart disease and bad lifestyle choices.
