Cosmetic surgery ABCs

The post-cosmetic surgery death last week of Donda West, mother of hip-hop star Kanye West, raised serious questions about what prospective plastic surgery patients can do to give themselves the best chance of a successful outcome. We spoke with Dr. Michael McGuire of Santa Monica to find out. McGuire is secretary of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, is on the board of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and is chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee of the California Society of Plastic Surgeons. Where to begin? It's as simple as ABC, McGuire said.

> A is for accredited surgery center.

"It doesn't matter how good a surgeon is if the surgery center (where the procedure is being done) isn't safe and equipped," said McGuire. (AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-12 15:42 GMT: Allergan, Covidien to market Lap-Band

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Allergan Inc., which makes Botox and sells surgical weight-loss devices, said Monday it will co-promote its Lap-Band product with health care products provider Covidien Ltd.

The Lap-Band is an adjustable gastric band, a device surgically implanted around the stomach to help severely obese patients lose weight by forcibly limiting food intake. The procedure is an alternative to more invasive gastric bypass surgery, commonly known as stomach stapling.

Under the multi-year agreement, which became effective Nov. 9, Covidien will co-promote Allergan's Lap-Band to bariatric and other surgeons in the United States. Pembroke, Bermuda-based Covidien makes medical devices and pharmaceutical products.

Covidien's sales representatives will help educate and train surgeons on the Lap-Band procedure, which costs roughly $12,000 to $20,000.

Brown feels heat as Libdems and Tories seek answer to West Lothian question

IT WAS always the unfinished business of devolution. Yesterday it returned to haunt Gordon Brown. First posed by Tam Dalyell 30 years ago, the West Lothian Question was left unanswered when Labour created the Scottish Parliament in 1999.

Yesterday, the pressure on the Labour Prime Minister intensified as another senior politician demanded "English votes on English laws". Chris Huhne, a contender for the leadership of the Liberal Democrat Party, became the latest parliamentarian to join the increasing clamour for what many see as a rebalancing of the UK constitution.

Mich. Medical Society Says Rate Drop Shows Tort Reform Law Working

A clear indication that Michigan's 1993 tort reforms are working is that the state's largest physician medical malpractice insurer is cutting its premiums by 12 to 25 percent for Wayne County physicians, the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) announced yesterday at a news conference in Detroit.

The average decrease for all physicians in Wayne County will be 13 percent beginning January 1, according to American Physicians Assurance Corp., a medical liability insurer based in East Lansing that is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the publicly held American Physicians Capital, Inc. (APCapital).

Statewide, American Physicians' malpractice insurance rates will be reduced by an average of 6.5 percent in 2008.

"Michigan's carefully designed tort reforms do not deny a truly injured patient from just compensation," said Sophie J.
