Minnelli a bit unsteady as she goes

It was "Liza with a Z," but without 34 pounds, at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on Saturday night. Liza Minnelli announced the weight loss during an occasionally wobbly performance showcasing her determination to overcome her problems with health and husbands.

Minnelli looked thinner than she has in decades. Her face is no longer puffy and, if anything, verges on gaunt. One costume showed off slender legs, and a shimmering black blouse exposing one shoulder cast the 61-year-old Broadway baby in a rather sexy light.

Her balance was a concern throughout the show. Minnelli's movement was unsteady, and she joked about needing the director's chair she sat in for a few numbers. Truth be told, her hands did more dancing than her feet. Hip replacement surgery will do that to you.

True love rebuffed?

THE mining sector will not always have China and India's ravenous industrial revolution appetites to put bread on its own table.

So you can see the logic of BHP Billiton's bid approach to Rio Tinto, rebuffed for now on price. It would unite the world's biggest and third biggest miners to create a £120 billion-plus behemoth, with all the scope for cost-cutting and revenue synergies that would entail.

No-one should doubt the ambition of the concept. It is clear BHP Billiton is looking five to ten years down the line, when the mining industry may well not have the exceptionally benign backcloth it has had in recent years.

If the deal does come off, for which it looks like BHP will need some sort of sweetener - perhaps a cash element that is now lacking - it would be the world's second-biggest takeover deal after mobile phone giant Vodafone's acquisition of Mannesmann in 2000.

Original `Dreamgirl' Jennifer Holliday is happy at last

For Jennifer Holliday, the original Effie White in Broadway's "Dreamgirls," life has had its share of nightmare moments.

Only 19 when the tumultuous "Dreamgirls" development process began, and 21 when the show opened in 1981, Holliday became an instant Broadway legend as soon as audiences heard her sing the show's standout anthem, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."

Holliday stayed with the show for three years, and though she won the Tony Award for best actress in a musical, she was unhappy and isolated - a long way away from her Houston, Texas, roots.

And her weight was an issue. Holliday has estimated that at her heaviest, she was 330 pounds or more.

After a string of failures - her recording career never took off, a Broadway-bound show about Mahalia Jackson self-destructed, her nine-month marriage ended in divorce - Holliday attempted suicide on her 30th birthday.

FDA Nod for Liver Cancer Pill

The American FDA has approved of the use of Nexavar (sorafenib), manufactured by Bayer HealthCare AG and Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc, as a liver cancer drug. This puts it way ahead of any competitors. Nexavar had already been approved of in 2005dfor the treatment o f kidney cancer in over 60 countries, including the USA. Now it will be the first to be also used for liver cancer or HCC that cannot be surgically removed. Liver cancer or HCC can be difficult to remove completely with surgery. Then, when all of the cancer is not removed, the disease proves fatal in about three to six months. Every year, about 600,000 people die from the sixth most common form of cancer in the world, liver cancer. Over 50%of these fatalities occur in China where additional trials are being carried out of the drug.

Sleep-deprived moms prone to gain weight

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Sleeping just five hours a night triples the risk of excessive weight for new moms a year after a baby's birth, U.S. researchers report.

Mothers who reported sleeping no more than five hours daily when babies were six months old had a three-times higher risk for weight retention -- at least 11 pounds -- at their baby's first birthday than moms who slept seven hours per day, the study by Kaiser Permanente and Harvard Medical School -Harvard Pilgrim Health Care said.

The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, is the first to examine sleep deprivation's impact on postpartum weight retention, a joint news release said. Previous studies examined the effect of early postpartum sleep deprivation on mothers' cognitive and emotional health.
